Aside from being a dedicated and caring healthcare
provider, one of the most important things a physician can do to ensure
the greatest possible success in private practice is to hire the
"highest caliber"
medical personnel they can find to keep their office running smoothly and
efficiently.
What makes someone qualified to be in this category? 1) Of course the necessary experience to be in his or her field. 2) A stable work history (job hoppers are a nightmare!) 3) A good work ethic: Not only is it important to find someone dependable and hardworking, but someone who is happy to pitch in wherever they are needed. A "team player" should have a good attitude and be easy to get along with. It is essential for co-workers to work well together to keep your patients feeling comfortable and satisfied with the care they are receiving. Even if a patient thinks highly of their physician but is treated poorly by the staff they may leave the practice and find care elsewhere. We have heard many stories of this nature in our 20 years in the field! 4) Excellent references: All of these issues must be addressed when doing a reference check. It does not matter what someone says they will do if given a chance. It only matters what they have done and how well they have done it! Just remember, keeping your salary and benefits competitive as well as providing a happy and healthy work environment will enable you to attract top notch employees and in turn keep your staff stable and your reputation for being a nice place to work intact. Never underestimate the importance of this! If a private practice ever gets a reputation of having a high turnover rate, it can spend enormous sums of money each year by constantly replacing personnel and then spend even more time, money, and energy training additional personnel only to lose them as well. It can take years to turn this around and we have seen many practices dissolve or be bought out because of it. "How does Celebrity Medical consistently attract high caliber medical professionals when all I get when I advertise are unqualified candidates tying up my phone and FAX lines?" This is easy. Celebrity Medical has been in business in the Washington Metropolitan area for over 20 years and it is well known among medical professionals seeking employment that if they have a stable work history, speak the queen's english, have a good work ethic, and excellent references, we will represent them and we will only tell them about positions that offer competitive salary and benefit structures and have a happy and healthy work environment. It is also fairly well known that we only represent practices and individuals that meet this criteria and we do not make exceptions (we don't want all the business, only the "good business"). So, even though we advertise every position we have, almost half the people we find jobs for each year are referred to us and we are very grateful for our loyal following. In closing, our bottom line is to make sure we do everything within our power to ensure we find the right person for the job, and the right job for the person. It is only by satisfying the special needs of our private practices as well as the medical professionals that we represent that we remain successful, and we are only successful if they are successful.
